Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a special holiday celebrated annually by young and old. For me, it's a day to recognize my own mother and celebrate the joys of being a mother myself. The sentiments of Mother's Day are beautifully captured in Someday by Alison McGhee with illustrations be Peter H. Reynolds.

Someday is an emotional story about a mother cherishing her baby, watching her grow into a child and ultimately becoming a mother herself, and ends with the daughter old and cherishing her mother's memory. While the text is simple and the illustrations are subtle, the emotions conveyed are strong. I can't help think about my own mother and the impact she's had on my life. My mother is perpetually happy and always fun to be around. As a child, she was very nurturing and could make any situation comforting. My mother is also very talented. She can master any skill quickly and win most games (physical or mental), partly because she's so positive and open to having fun. But what I love most about my mom, is the unwavering support she provides. Whatever the situation, event, crisis, or celebration . . . she's always there. For good or bad, better or worse; I can always rely on my mom for strength, support, and unconditional love. This is what I cherish most about my mother and hope to provide to my own daughter over the years.

If you haven't read McGhee's Someday, I highly recommend it. It's a picture book best suited for adults, and a loving tribute to a mother's impact and importance. It's a perfect gift for Mother's Day, and a wonderful way to say thanks to the special women in our lives. To my own mom, thanks for your unconditional love and support.
