Story Retelling with Ozobot

As a library media specialist, I love this lesson because it combines two aspects of my job - literacy & robotics!  This lesson teaches sequencing and is perfect for 1st and 2nd graders.

Do you know the “There Was an Old Lady . . . “ books by Lucille Colandro?  There are a TON of fun books in this series!  Any of these books can be used for this lesson.  Students can recall the sequence of items swallowed by the old lady and code Ozobot to retell the story.

With the help of my colleague, Blythe Lamont, we created an Ozobot track that can be used to retell any book in the “There Was an Old Lady . . . “ series.  It looks like this:

Download HERE

LESSON DETAILS

1) Read aloud one of the books from the “There Was and Old Lady . . . “ series.

2) Review the sequence of items swallowed by the old lady.  Have students write each item, in order, on the track.  The line is curvy, so pay close attention to the placement of each number!

3)  Use markers to add Ozobot codes to each swallowed items.  Students can choose their codes or the teacher can lead the students with specific codes.  Since the track is a curvy line, some codes need to be recorded “backward.”  Pay close attention to the path that the Ozobot will travel!  I like to add a u-turn code at the end and at the beginning of the track to make Ozobot move non-stop!

4)  Watch Ozobot read the codes, perform tricks, and retell the story.  Since the Ozobot is the old lady eating all the items in order, I like to tape an image of the old lady to each Ozobot.

#mustreadin2020 - final update

This is my #mustreadin2020 final update.  I love participating in this reading challenge hosted by Carrie Gelson of There's a Book for That because it connects me with a community of readers and encourages me to read newly released books to share with my students.  In January, I created my #mustreadin2020 reading goal.  As a reminder, here they are:

I'm happy to report that I've read ALL of the books on reading list - plus A LOT of additional new titles!
